Why Do Some Songs Sound Different on the Radio?

The first issue was deciding on the right radio mix. By the time a song is played on the radio, it may have undergone several transformations from the album version. This is why radio listeners often have the confusing experience of buying a CD and thinking, “This sounds different from the radio.” It is different—sometimes dramatically so. If the same song is played on a variety of radio formats, there may be several mixes: an alternative mix with louder guitars and drums, a pop mix with friendlier guitars and more vocals, an acoustic mix, a dance mix, and so on. The mix engineers all have distinct sounds. It’s not unusual for the alternative-rock radio mix to be done by one engineer and the pop mix by someone else. Plus, the alternative-rock mix by engineer A may be scrapped, and engineer B may be called in to redo it. The competition is fierce, and mix engineers love to snatch a song away from one of their rivals and remix it.

Your parents had to have let you stay up till midnight Friday/Saturday August 1, 1981 to have ever seen this. This probably all seems totally quaint and archaic now but this collectively blew us ALL away back in the day 🙂

EDIT: Had to remove about 3.5 mins of this due to a claim by “April Wine”…I really tried to get them to understand that this was an historical archive, not an attempt to steal money from their band….They didn’t want to hear it…All the other artist were totally ok with this but “April Wine” said FU. Go Figure : / EDIT: EDIT: Video was taken down again because Cliff Richard suddenly decided that I was ripping him off and shut down the video…I wrote back trying to get him to change his mind but no deal, had to chop Cliff out of the video for it to be posted again. Rock and Roll Longevity

I believe we’re staying young longer because of rock and roll. Because of the generation that decided they weren’t going to die before they got old. Instead of dying young, they just didn’t get old. Fifty is the new thirty—or, twenty-nine, really—because the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Iggy, and Motörhead keep touring. They provide a template for the rest of us. They show us how good, how seasoned we get as we age. They show us how many good times can be had after our forties.

The trick to staying young in any era—and in any profession and relationship—is to have something to strive for. I’ve seen Aerosmith many times since the Rocks tour, and every time you can just tell that they are pushing themselves to play that perfect show.

We all have our down moments. We all have that thing in the middle of the night that my mom used to call the “3 a.m. blues.” You can’t always kick ass. I’d be a liar if I said I was batting anywhere close to a thousand. But you have to try. You have to recognize the times when you’re falling down and pick yourself back up. For me, that means going to see Motörhead, Iggy, and Aerosmith—guys who have saved my butt time and again.

Aerosmith have somehow kept themselves current and relevant through countless fads and eras in rock and pop music, and they do it by constantly writing songs. They definitely have that “thing” to strive for, and they are, at seventeen or more years older than me, ageless.

The Stones are almost a generation older (in age, that is) than the boys in Aerosmith. But they were still filming high-definition concert films during their 50th Anniversary Tour. We in the audience can see the creases, scars, warts, and all. They don’t give a fuck, and they are a quarter of a century older than I am. I’d be an asshole at this point to think fifty was anywhere close to old. The Stones have single-handedly raised the worldwide bar of how we, as men, think about ourselves in terms of age.

The Nippon Budokan (Japanese: 日本武道館, Hepburn: Nippon Budōkan, lit. ‘Japan Martial Arts Hall‘), often shortened to simply Budokan, is an indoor arena in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It was originally built for the inaugural Olympic judo competition in the 1964 Summer Olympics. While its primary purpose is to host martial arts contests, the arena has gained additional fame as one of the world’s most outstanding musical performance venues.[1] The Budokan was a popular venue for Japanese professional wrestling for a time, and it has hosted numerous other sporting events, such as the 1967 Women’s Volleyball World Championship. Most recently, the arena hosted the Olympic debut of karate in the 2020 Summer Olympics, as well as the judo competition at both the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

A number of famous rock music acts have played at the Budokan. The Beatles were the first rock group to play there, in a series of concerts held between June 30 and July 2, 1966. ABBA ended their last tour and held their final live performance there in March 1980. Numerous acts have recorded live albums at the Budokan, including Blur, TVXQ, Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Cheap Trick, Neil Young, Dream Theater, Duran Duran, Kiss, Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Judas Priest, Paul McCartney, Asia, Ringo Starr, Journey, Deep Purple, Masayoshi Takanaka, and Michael Schenker Group.
